Travel Details: Springfield, Massachusetts is located in the Pioneer Valley (Connecticut River), about 90 miles (145 Km) from Boston and 142 miles (228 Km) from New York City at the intersections of Interstate Highways I-91 and I-90. It is served by air via Bradley International Airport (airport code BDL) in Hartford, CT 18.6 miles (29.93 KM) and by Amtrak trains.

You won't have to drive far to get some great foliage shots. In an hour and a half or less drive you can be in:

  • Southern Vermont and New Hampshire if you head north via I-91.

  • If you turn off I-91 onto Route 2 in Greenfield (just before the Vermont state line) you can see some of the most spectacular foliage in Massachusetts from the Mohawk Trail

  • If you head west on I-90 you will be deep in the Massachusetts Berkshire Mountains. There are some great panoramic shots north of Springfield from Mount Sugarloaf in Sunderland or from the summit house on Mt. Holyoke in Hadley MA or from Mt. Tom in Holyoke.

  • Peak foliage can vary widely depending from year to year, but in average years that weekend and the following week should be peak or near peak in Southern New England. Exactly where the colors are at their peak will depend on a variety of conditions. But we will be tracking the various state websites that give daily guidance to the prime color areas. Thus you are almost guaranteed that you’ll be able to get some good leaf-peeping. http://gonewengland.about.com/cs/fallfoliage/a/aacyberleafpeep.htm http://www.yankeemagazine.com/foliage/index.php

  • Saturday will be registration day. If you arrive early you can explore the local area and make photographs. We’ll also have discount tickets available for the Basketball Hall of Fame or you can check out some of the other local attractions like the Springfield Armory National Historic Site or some of the great Art Museums in the area.
